Why a blog about caring and selling?

Two reasons – first, we are a unique bunch.  I have tremendous respect for all of you who are making a living by selling a product or service.  We take rejection regularly and are persistent beyond expectations.  Not only do we need to know the inside and out of our product or service we have to have exceptional communication skills.  Throw in a bit of psychology and the ability to read non-verbal cues and you have someone who is an artist, a master of their craft.

Second, I am passionate about selling.  Helping a business find the best solution gives me a high.  It isn’t about the money it’s about a positive outcome and using my skills, knowledge and abilities to make it happen.

This blog isn’t about being on a pedestal and ranting or preaching.  My hope is that it will be a forum with discussions about things that are close to our hearts and important to our success.  I’ll start things off by sharing my insights and then open it up to you.  I anticipate learning more from you than you from me.

B2B sales is the focus but those of you who sell to consumers are welcome.  Much of the information and discussion will cross over.  My experience is almost 100% B2B so I don’t want to assume my views cover consumer sales as well.  Take what works for you and feel free to share when there is a difference.

Who the heck is this woman?  You have a right to know and I am open to questions if you have a need to know more.  I started selling in my teens and most every position I’ve held since then involved sales in some aspect.  For many years I was the traditional outside sales rep with a territory and went door to door.  Then I got smarter and set appointments by phone and did a bit of cold calling in the area of my appointments.  Eventually I moved to inside sales.  The first year was rough.  I had a hard time staying in my chair and had a strong urge to see the faces of my prospects and clients.  Eventually the efficiency of making numerous contacts instead of travel and time waiting for the C/P won out.  Geographic boundaries are non-existent and I can sell anywhere in the country, even the world.  It is going on 10 years I’ve been selling by phone and I won’t go back.  I’ve honed my listening skills to be able to detect fine details about my C/P and their environment.  Building relationships is different but still happens and meeting the client in person is icing on the cake if it does transpire.
